“ It is said that school uniform gives pupils a sense of identity and encourages good discipline. Do you agree? "Wearing School uniforms are compulsory for us in our primary, secondary and junior college education. Different Schools have different design of the uniforms to give students a sense of identity and belonging. And I agree that school uniform usually gives pupils a sense of identity and encourages good discipline.
Firstly, uniform will let people differentiate between different schools and levels. I feel that school uniforms will definitely give pupils a sense of identity. It will let one be proud of where he belongs, and understand that there will always be people from the same school helping him. Most of us will always feel a sense of belonging when we see a person in the same uniform at times when we felt lonely. The feeling is like we are from the same root. For example in secondary one, when you know no one in your class, you will first approach the ones that are from the same primary school as you, don’t you? You will just feel comfortable as things are more familiar.
Secondly, I strongly believe that uniform is necessary as pupils will maintain good discipline in their uniforms so that they will not disgrace their school or bring bad impressions to their school. School uniforms also makes students look smart and educated. Schools also require pupils to ‘tuck in’ their shirt and behave well in their uniforms. Punishments will be given if they failed to do so. This will thus maintain a certain degree of discipline in the pupils. Students, our future generation leaders, will give others an impression of our country. This is important as tourist will judge our country by what they see and the behaviour of our people. So, it’s the school’s duty to encourage and maintain good discipline of the pupils.
However, some people disagree that school uniform will encourage good discipline. They think that school uniform is unnecessary and will even bring more disciplinary problems. However, I do not see why looking smart and tidy in uniforms will bring about more disciplinary problems. Some people may also think that the sense of identity that uniforms gives will only applies to good and popular schools. I disagree with it as students should hence behave well in the public to show the others that students from neighbourhood school can also maintain good discipline. Won’t this impress the public more?
A person in school uniform will always give a better image than a person in his own casual clothes who looks equally neat and smart. School uniform gives others a mindset that the person is educated and with good discipline. Therefore, I can conclude that school uniform gives pupils a sense of identity and encourages good discipline.
